Message from PPCB Board Chair

Update from Tim Lovelock.

Kia ora PPCB e te Whānau,

It has been an exceptionally busy time for PPCB, and I want to sincerely thank our negotiating team for all their mahi in securing an offer that was able to be presented to you promptly and which you ratified last week. Your perseverance and commitment to staying the course have been invaluable.

The agreement has been signed. We will now move swiftly to work with the Ministry to ensure your pay increase is implemented and to progress the other important work streams we have successfully negotiated.

I’d like to take this opportunity to warmly welcome our new members to PPCB.  It’s been a busy start to the term for our operations team as they’ve worked to get everyone joined up and to make sure accurate information is shared about the impending strike.

With a new union comes other important work and over the past few months, our Board has also been hard at work developing our strategic plan, annual implementation plan, and calendar. We’ll share these with you in the new year, but I wanted to highlight a few key areas from the work we’ve been doing so far.

As a union, our focus is on negotiating the best possible contract for principals, providing strong support for members, and working alongside other groups that share our commitment to advancing the needs of principals across the country.

Key to PPCB is the following:

Mā te Tumuaki, Mō te Tumuaki
World-class conditions for world-class leadership, resulting in world-class outcomes.

These world-class conditions ensure principalship is valued by:

  • Appropriate remuneration that acknowledges the complexity of the role, recognises experience, and is equitable.

  • Retaining principals in the profession through conditions that future-proof the role, such as increased employer superannuation, long service leave, and sabbaticals.

  • Ensuring principals have adequate resources, including staffing, to have the best conditions for tamariki and staff to thrive.

  • Advocating for a stable political environment that supports education through bipartisan cooperation, ensuring continuity and long-term planning for principals and schools

Our strategic goals are

  1. Be the credible and influential voice that advocates on behalf of primary principals on professional, educational and systems issues.

  2. PPCB is a recognised and respected professional body

  3. Building a strong, future-focused union with sustainable leadership structures and succession planning.

We look forward to sharing the whole plan with you and continuing to support you in your mahi.

Nga mihi nui,

Tim Lovelock

PPCB Board Chair
